Background
This gene encodes a nucleolar protein belonging to the SelWTH family. It functions as an oxidoreductase and protects neurons against UVB-induced damage by inhibiting apoptotic pathways. SELH promotes mitochondrial biogenesis and function, suppresses cellular senescence through genome maintenance and redox regulation. It is a selenoprotein containing the rare amino acid selenocysteine (Sec) at its active site, encoded by the UGA codon. The 3′ UTRs of selenoprotein mRNAs contain a conserved stem-loop structure, the SECIS element, enabling recognition of UGA as a Sec codon instead of a stop signal. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
