Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a regulatory subunit of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a heterotrimer consisting of an alpha catalytic subunit and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits. AMPK acts as an energy sensor that monitors cellular energy status. Under metabolic stress, AMPK becomes activated and phosphorylates key enzymes such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and beta-hydroxy beta-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR), which regulate fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. The gamma-3 subunit is predominantly expressed in skeletal muscle and may play a key role in energy metabolism regulation.
