Target Information
The protein encoded by the PFKFB3 gene belongs to a family of bifunctional enzymes involved in both the synthesis and degradation of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate (F2,6BP), a key regulator of glycolysis in eukaryotic cells.
It exhibits:
- 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase activity, synthesizing F2,6BP
- Fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase activity, degrading F2,6BP
PFKFB3 is essential for cell cycle progression and apoptosis prevention. It regulates cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1), linking glucose metabolism to cell proliferation and tumor cell survival.
Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
