Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes also lack 5S rRNA. The MRPL44 gene encodes a protein component of the 39S subunit.
