Target Information

Nuclear lamins form a network of intermediate-type filaments at the nucleoplasmic side of the nuclear membrane.
Two main subtypes of nuclear lamins can be distinguished: A-type and B-type lamins.
A-type lamins (lamin A, lamin C, lamin Adel 10) arise from the same gene by alternative splicing, while B-type lamins (lamin B1, lamin B2) are encoded by distinct genes.

Mutations in A-type lamins are associated with several rare but dominant genetic disorders, including:

  • Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy
  • Dilated cardiomyopathy with conduction-system disease
  • Dunnigan-type familial partial lipodystrophy

A-type lamins are expressed during cell differentiation and interact with chromatin, suggesting a regulatory role in differential gene expression.
