Target Information
This gene encodes a secreted, homodimeric glycoprotein expressed in various tissues and may function in autocrine or paracrine signaling. It contains a CAG-rich 5′ UTR and 11 conserved cysteine residues, and is phosphorylated by protein kinase C on serine residues. The protein is involved in regulating renal and intestinal calcium/phosphate transport, cell metabolism, and calcium/phosphate homeostasis. Overexpression of human stanniocalcin 1 in mice results in elevated serum phosphate, dwarfism, and increased metabolic rate. Altered expression has been observed in hepatocellular, ovarian, and breast cancers.
