This gene belongs to the cytidine deaminase gene family and is part of a cluster on chromosome 22, likely formed by gene duplication. Members of this cluster encode proteins structurally and functionally related to the C-to-U RNA-editing cytidine deaminase APOBEC1. They inhibit retroviruses, such as HIV, by deaminating cytosine residues in nascent retroviral cDNA.
