Target Information
Polyamines are ubiquitous polycationic alkylamines such as spermine, spermidine, putrescine, and agmatine. These molecules participate in various cellular functions including:
- Cell cycle modulation
- Scavenging reactive oxygen species
- Gene expression control
- Neurotransmission regulation via receptor activity and intracellular signaling
The SMOX gene encodes an FAD-containing enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of spermine to spermidine, producing hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoenzymes have been identified, with varying oxidase activity.
