Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the RecQ and DEAH subfamilies of DNA/RNA helicases. These helicases are involved in transcription, replication, recombination, and repair. The protein localizes predominantly in the nucleolus and has intrinsic 3′ to 5′ DNA helicase and exonuclease activities. It may contribute to double-strand DNA break repair via interaction with the Ku70/80 heterodimer. Defects in this gene cause Werner syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by premature aging.
