CK1 alpha is a member of the casein kinase I (CKI) family, encoding serine/threonine kinases that preferentially phosphorylate acidic substrates. CKI proteins are monomeric (25–55 kDa) and localized in nuclei, cytoplasm, and membranes of eukaryotic cells.

- Phosphorylates CTNNB1 at Ser-45
- May phosphorylate PER1 and PER2
- Plays a role in chromosome segregation during mitosis
