Target Information
Cardiac Troponin I (TnI) is a cardiac muscle–specific inhibitory protein that forms a complex with troponin C (TnC) and troponin T (TnT). TnT binds to tropomyosin to form a troponin–tropomyosin complex, anchored by the binding of TnI to actin within thin filaments. Upon calcium binding to TnC, the inhibitory region of TnI is released from actin, allowing myosin attachment and muscle contraction. Measurement of blood TnI and TnT levels serves as an important diagnostic indicator of cardiac muscle damage, helping differentiate angina from myocardial infarction. Cardiac Troponin I also inhibits angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro. Mutations in the Cardiac Troponin I gene are associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 (CMH7) and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM).
