Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity. Alpha actin is a major component of the contractile apparatus, while beta and gamma actins regulate cell motility. Smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) is an alpha actin isoform found in skeletal and smooth muscle, contributing to cytoskeletal filament formation and muscle contraction.
It is expressed in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of the breast and salivary glands. Mutations in the smooth muscle actin gene are associated with familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6. Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and can also appear in fibroblastic stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive processes. Multiple alternatively spliced variants of smooth muscle actin have been reported.
