Target Information
DNA-binding protein SATB2 binds to DNA at nuclear matrix- or scaffold-associated regions and recognizes the sugar-phosphate structure of double-stranded DNA.
It acts as a transcription factor controlling nuclear gene expression by binding to matrix attachment regions (MARs) of DNA and inducing chromatin-loop remodeling.
SATB2 also serves as a docking site for chromatin remodeling enzymes, recruiting corepressors (HDACs) or coactivators (HATs) to promoters and enhancers.
It is essential for initiating upper-layer neuron (UL1) specific genetic programs and repressing deep-layer neuron (DL) and UL2 specific genes, likely via modulation of BCL11B expression.
Mutations in the SATB2 gene are associated with cleft palate isolated (CPI).
