Target Information
Ubiquinone (coenzyme Q or Q) is a key component of electron transport pathways in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. It consists of a hydrophobic isoprenoid tail anchoring it to membranes and a quinone head group responsible for activity in the respiratory chain.
The S. cerevisiae COQ3 gene encodes an O-methyltransferase required for two steps in coenzyme Q biosynthesis. This enzyme methylates early and final intermediates, converting demethyl-ubiquinone to coenzyme Q. The COQ3 gene product can also methylate the prokaryotic intermediate 2-hydroxy-6-polyprenyl phenol.
