Target Information
Prostein is a novel prostate-specific protein expressed in both normal and malignant prostate tissues. It is a type IIIa plasma membrane protein with a cleavable signal peptide and 11 transmembrane-spanning regions. Expression of prostein is androgen-responsive; treatment of LNCaP cells with androgen up-regulates both message and protein expression levels. Therefore, prostein serves as a prostate-specific marker useful in diagnosing and monitoring prostate cancer.
