RIC8A는 Guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF)로, 일부 G-alpha 단백질(GNAI1, GNAO1, GNAQ)을 활성화시켜 GDP를 GTP로 교환시킵니다. GNAS에는 작용하지 않습니다.
이 단백질은 세포분열 중 염색체 이동 시 미세소관 인장력 조절에 관여하며, NuMA-GPSM2-G(i)-alpha-GDP 복합체로부터 G(i)-alpha-GTP 및 NuMA 단백질의 방출을 유도할 수 있습니다. 또한 G(q)-coupled receptor 매개 ERK 활성화를 촉진하여 G(q)-alpha (GNAQ) 단백질의 활성화에 기여합니다.
