Cholesterol is essential for proliferation, growth and survival of cultured cells. Though most cells can synthesize lipids and sterols required for their metabolic processes, supplementation with preformed lipids reduces the need for their biosynthesis and increases the efficiency of cell metabolism and cell growth. Also, certain cell lines such as NS0 (mouse myeloma cell line) require large amount of cholesterol but they are incapable of producing it. These cells require supplementation of culture media with a source of sterol. Cholesterol supplement is used as an additive in serum free media.
