SIRT7는 효모 Sir2 단백질과 상동성을 가진 sirtuin 단백질 패밀리에 속합니다. 이 단백질군은 sirtuin core domain을 특징으로 하며 네 가지 클래스로 분류되며, SIRT7은 class IV에 속합니다. 인간 sirtuin의 기능은 완전히 규명되지 않았지만, 효모의 sirtuin 단백질은 후성유전적 유전자 침묵 조절 및 rDNA 재조합 억제에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 연구 결과에 따르면 인간 sirtuin 단백질은 세포 내 조절 단백질로서 mono-ADP-ribosyltransferase 활성을 가질 수 있습니다.
