Target Information
Dicer is a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) endoribonuclease that plays a central role in short dsRNA-mediated post-transcriptional gene silencing. It cleaves long dsRNAs and pre-microRNAs (miRNA) into fragments of 21–23 nucleotides with 3′ overhangs, producing short interfering RNAs (siRNA) and mature microRNAs. These RNA fragments guide the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to complementary RNAs for degradation or translational repression.
RNA interference (RNAi) mediated by siRNAs regulates the elimination of transcripts from repetitive DNA elements and the degradation of exogenous viral RNA. The miRNA pathway specifically controls gene expression at the post-transcriptional level.
