Target Information
Secretory carrier membrane proteins (SCAMPs) are components of post-Golgi membranes involved in membrane trafficking. In fibroblasts, SCAMPs localize to compartments related to receptor recycling and endocytosis. In neurons, they associate with synaptic vesicles, secretory granules, and transporter vesicles.
SCAMPs contain four transmembrane regions and a cytoplasmic tail. SCAMPs 1–3 have N-terminal NPF repeats that interact with EH domain proteins, aiding vesicle budding from the plasma membrane or Golgi complex. SCAMPs 4 and 5 lack these repeats. SCAMPs 1–4 are ubiquitously expressed, while SCAMP5 is brain-specific and expressed later in development, correlating with synapse maturation.
