Kidins220 유전자는 신경계에서 주로 발현되는 막 단백질을 암호화하며, 신경세포의 생존, 축삭 및 수상돌기 분화, 시냅스 가소성 조절에 관여합니다. 이 단백질은 막 수용체, 세포질 신호전달 구성요소 및 세포골격 단백질과 상호작용하여 신경영양인자 경로와 여러 세포내 신호 경로 간의 교차 신호를 매개합니다.
이 유전자의 비정상적 발현은 알츠하이머병을 포함한 다양한 신경정신질환 및 신경퇴행성 질환의 발병과 관련이 있습니다. 자연 발생 돌연변이는 경직성 하반신마비, 지적 장애, 안진 및 비만을 특징으로 하는 증후군과 연관되어 있습니다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사체 변형이 생성됩니다.
