Target Information

Occludin is a 65 kDa protein that can exist in a variety of phosphorylated forms, ranging up to approximately 82 kDa. It is involved in regulating both localization and function of tight junctions. Polyunsaturated fatty acids up-regulate occludin expression, increasing transendothelial resistance and reducing permeability to large molecules. Expression levels vary by tissue — highly expressed in brain tissue at cell-cell contact sites and lower in non-neural tissues. Structural features are conserved across species. Under-expression of occludin contributes to increased permeability in tumor endothelial junctions, leading to brain tumor edema.
