Target Information
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, occurs during normal cellular differentiation and development of multicellular organisms. It is induced by cytokines such as TNF and Fas ligand through death domain-containing receptors TNFR1 and Fas. These signals are transduced by death domain (DD)-containing adapter molecules and members of the ICE/CED-3 protease family. Daxx, a DD-containing molecule, binds specifically to the Fas death domain, enhancing Fas-induced apoptosis and activating the JNK pathway. Daxx is widely expressed in fetal and adult human and mouse tissues, indicating its essential role in Fas signaling pathways.
