Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins of the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The 28S subunit of the mammalian mitoribosome may play a key role in translation initiation. The MRPS31 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that has been associated with type 1 diabetes, though its role in disease etiology is not yet clear. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are found on chromosomes 3 and 13.
