Target Information
Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection induces a disease state characterized by liver damage, inflammation, and viral persistence, and increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family. Its genome is partially double-stranded circular DNA enclosed in a nucleocapsid (core antigen, HBcAg) and surrounded by a spherical envelope (surface antigen, HBsAg). The core antigen shares sequences with the e antigen (HBeAg), but no cross-reactivity between the two proteins has been observed. HBV also encodes a DNA polymerase that acts as a reverse transcriptase.
Hepatitis B infection is typically diagnosed via serological tests detecting HBsAg; as the disease progresses, HBcAg detection may be required. Persistent HBsAg presence (>6 months) indicates chronic hepatitis B. The antigenic determinant of HBsAg defines specific serotypes and supports immunodetection. HBsAg shows antigenic heterogeneity with determinant pairs (d/y and w/r), yielding combinations such as adw, ayw, adr, and ayr.
