Target Information
Various cellular organelles and vesicles are transported along microtubules in the cytoplasm. Membrane recycling of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), Golgi assembly at the microtubule organizing center, and lysosome alignment along microtubules are related processes. The transport of organelles requires microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs), such as kinesin, an ATPase that moves vesicles toward the plus end of microtubules. Kinectin, a large integral ER membrane protein, interacts with kinesin, and antibodies directed against kinectin inhibit this binding.
