Target Information
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that assists rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions. It is abundant in all mammalian tissues.
CA IX is one of the most inducible genes under hypoxia, regulated by HIF-1 alpha. It plays a key role in pH regulation and cell death under hypoxic conditions.
Blocking CA IX increases cell death under hypoxia, making it a reliable histochemical marker for hypoxia studies.
