Target Information
SOD1 (superoxide dismutase 1) binds copper and zinc ions and is one of two isozymes responsible for destroying free superoxide radicals in the body. It acts as a soluble cytoplasmic homodimer converting superoxide radicals to molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Mutations in this gene are linked to familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Rare transcript variants have been reported.
