Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family of ligands, which are part of the TGF-beta superfamily of signaling molecules. GDNFs possess neurotrophic properties and have potential applications in gene therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. Artemin supports the survival of several peripheral neuron populations and dopaminergic CNS neurons. Its expression pattern near these neurons supports its role in both the PNS and CNS. This protein acts as a ligand for the RET receptor and utilizes GFR-alpha 3 as a coreceptor. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
