Target Information

The soluble sulfotransferases contribute to the elimination of xenobiotics, activation of procarcinogens, and regulation of hormones by catalyzing sulfate conjugation of these substances. Members of the SULT1, SULT2, and SULT3 groups show selectivity toward specific substrates.

SULT1A1 (sulfotransferase family, cytosolic, 1A, phenol-preferring, member 1), also known as STP or STP1, is a 295 amino acid cytoplasmic protein belonging to the sulfotransferase family. It functions as a homodimer expressed in brain, liver, skin, and lung tissue, catalyzing the sulfate conjugation of catecholamines, phenolic drugs, and neurotransmitters. Through this activity, SULT1A1 aids in the elimination of various compounds and may play a role in the activation of carcinogenic N-hydroxyarylamines, suggesting possible involvement in carcinogenesis.
