Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is one of the highly conserved mini-chromosome maintenance proteins (MCM) essential for eukaryotic genome replication initiation. The hexameric MCM complex is a key component of the pre-replication complex (pre_RC) and contributes to replication fork formation and recruitment of DNA replication-related proteins. The MCM complex, including MCM2, 6, and 7, exhibits DNA helicase activity and functions as a DNA unwinding enzyme. CDC2 kinase phosphorylation reduces its helicase activity and chromatin binding. The gene is located near PRKDC/DNA-PK on chromosome 8, involved in DNA double-strand break repair. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported.
