Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of four RNA species and approximately 80 structurally distinct proteins.
The RPS6 gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It is a major substrate for multiple protein kinases, with phosphorylation occurring at five C-terminal serine residues in response to various stimuli such as growth factors and mitogens.
Dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest, and RPS6 may play a role in regulating cell growth and proliferation through selective mRNA translation. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
