Target Information
Mutations in the ABCA1 gene (ATP-binding cassette transporter 1) are associated with Tangier disease (TD), an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by absence of plasma HDL and cholesterol ester deposition in the reticulo-endothelial system.
ABCA1 mediates the apo-A1–associated export of cholesterol and phospholipids from cells, and is expressed on the plasma membrane and Golgi complex.
Its activity is regulated by cholesterol flux, balancing cholesterol transfer between HDL and macrophages in competition with SR-BI.
