Target Information

The CASP3 gene encodes a cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family member. Sequential activation of caspases is essential for the execution phase of apoptosis.
Caspase-3 exists as an inactive proenzyme that undergoes proteolytic processing to form active subunits. It cleaves and activates caspases 6, 7, and 9, and is itself processed by caspases 8, 9, and 10.
This enzyme plays a key role in the cleavage of amyloid-beta 4A precursor protein, associated with neuronal death in Alzheimer’s disease.
Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
