Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptors are members of the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, encoded by single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific.
