Target Information
Integrins are heterodimers composed of alpha and beta subunits that form noncovalently associated transmembrane glycoprotein receptors. Different alpha-beta combinations determine ligand-binding specificity. Integrins mediate cell-matrix and cell-cell adhesion and transduce signals regulating gene expression and cell growth.
The integrin beta-4 subunit acts as a receptor for laminins and associates with the alpha-6 subunit, playing a key role in invasive carcinoma biology. Mutations in this gene are linked to epidermolysis bullosa with pyloric atresia. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encode distinct isoforms.
