Target Information
Human membralin is unique and does not share significant sequence homology with other human genes, except for membralins of other species. The membralin gene contains 11 exons, encoding at least two splice variants in human cancer:
- Membralin-1 (long form): Comprises all 11 exons, encoding a 620-amino acid protein.
- Membralin-3 (short form): Lacks exon 10, encoding a 408-amino acid protein.
Expression of membralin isoforms is tissue-dependent. The long form (membralin-1) is expressed in ovarian and colorectal carcinomas, while the short form (membralin-3) is expressed in breast and pancreatic carcinomas. Recent studies suggest membralin may serve as a novel tumor-associated marker in ovarian serous carcinomas.
