Target Information
Defensins are a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides produced by neutrophils. Members of this family share high sequence similarity. The beta Defensin 1 gene encodes an antimicrobial peptide that contributes to epithelial surface resistance against microbial colonization. This gene is located near defensin alpha 1 and is associated with cystic fibrosis pathogenesis.
