Target Information
Erythropoietin (EPO) is a growth factor essential for survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors. It induces final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and stimulates production of hemoglobin.
The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed on precursor cells and decreases with maturation. Hepatocytes produce EPO in fetuses, while kidney interstitial cells are the main source after birth.
EPO expression increases during hypoxia, and low levels are found in lung and brain tissues. Recent studies suggest EPO may protect neuronal tissue and promote repair.
