EpoR encodes the erythropoietin receptor, a member of the cytokine receptor family. When erythropoietin binds to this receptor, it activates the Jak2 tyrosine kinase, which subsequently triggers intracellular signaling pathways including Ras/MAP kinase, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, and STAT transcription factors. Activation of the erythropoietin receptor promotes erythroid cell survival. Mutations in this gene can cause erythroleukemia and familial erythrocytosis. Dysregulation may also influence tumor growth. Multiple transcript variants are produced via alternative splicing.
