Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, in contrast to prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. Proteins composing the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, affecting sequence homology recognition. The MRPL20 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with a pseudogene located on chromosome 21q.
