The membrane-associated protein encoded by this gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes and are classified into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
This protein, part of the MDR/TAP subfamily, functions as an ATP-dependent drug efflux pump with broad substrate specificity, contributing to multidrug resistance by reducing intracellular drug accumulation. It also plays a role as a transporter in the blood-brain barrier.
