Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (GPXs) are ubiquitously expressed enzymes that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen and organic hydroperoxides using glutathione. Multiple isoforms exist, differing in structure and localization:
- GPX1 (cGPx): Cytosolic/mitochondrial, selenium-dependent, first discovered member of the GPX family.
- GPX2 (GI-GPx): Expressed in gastrointestinal epithelium.
- GPX3 (pGPx): Secreted by kidney into blood plasma.
- GPX4 (PH-GPx): Reduces membrane-embedded hydroperoxides and lipid peroxides.
- GPX5 (eGPx): Epididymis-specific, cysteine-containing isoform.
All mammalian GPX family members, except GPX3 and GPX5, contain selenocysteine at their active site.
