Background
Histones are basic nuclear proteins that form the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fiber in eukaryotes. Approximately 146 bp of DNA wraps around a nucleosome, an octamer composed of pairs of the four core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). Chromatin fiber compaction is further mediated by linker histone H1, which interacts with DNA between nucleosomes to form higher-order chromatin structures. This gene, located on chromosome 6p22-p21.3, is intronless and encodes a replication-dependent histone H3 family member. Transcripts lack polyA tails and instead contain a palindromic termination element. (RefSeq, Aug 2015)
