Background
The protein encoded by the CA8 gene was initially named CA-related protein due to sequence similarity with other carbonic anhydrase genes. However, this gene product lacks enzymatic carbonic anhydrase activity. Despite this, it retains the designation based on sequence identity. The absence of CA8 transcription in the cerebellum of lurcher mutant mice indicates its role in neurological function. Mutations in CA8 are associated with cerebellar ataxia, mental retardation, and dysequilibrium syndrome 3 (CMARQ3). Polymorphisms are linked to osteoporosis, and overexpression in osteosarcoma cells suggests an oncogenic role. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants.
