Background
This gene encodes a member of the TNF receptor superfamily. The receptor exists in membrane-bound and soluble forms that interact with corresponding forms of its ligand, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). Binding of membrane-bound TNF-α induces receptor trimerization and activation, influencing cell survival, apoptosis, and inflammation. Proteolytic processing releases a soluble receptor form that binds free TNF-α to inhibit inflammation. Mutations in this gene cause tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) and may be linked to multiple sclerosis.
