Background
Serine/threonine kinase 3 (STK3) Homo sapiens.
This gene encodes a serine/threonine protein kinase activated by proapoptotic molecules, indicating its role as a growth suppressor. Cleavage by caspase removes the inhibitory C-terminal portion, and the N-terminal portion translocates to the nucleus, forming an active kinase that promotes chromatin condensation during apoptosis. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Jan 2012).
