Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins comprising mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, both in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL32 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein of the L32 ribosomal protein family. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found on chromosome Xp. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
