Cellular Localization	Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Chromosome. In interphase cells, most condensin complex is in the cytoplasm, with a minority associated with chromatin. During mitosis, the complex associates with chromatin. CDK1 phosphorylation at prophase promotes chromosome condensation, and dissociation occurs in late telophase.
Background	This gene encodes a subunit of the condensin complex responsible for chromosome condensation and stabilization during mitosis and meiosis. Phosphorylation activates the condensin complex. Pseudogenes exist on chromosomes 8 and 15. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. (RefSeq, Aug 2012)
