Target Information
The SMN complex plays a catalytic role in the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), which are essential components of the spliceosome and critical for pre-mRNA splicing. Most spliceosomal snRNPs contain a common set of Sm proteins (SNRPB, SNRPD1, SNRPD2, SNRPD3, SNRPE, SNRPF, and SNRPG) that form a heptameric ring on the Sm site of small nuclear RNA. In the cytosol, Sm proteins are held in an inactive 6S pICln-Sm complex by the chaperone CLNS1A. The SMN complex dissociates CLNS1A and facilitates the assembly and nuclear transport of snRNPs. GEMIN5 acts as the snRNA-binding protein within the SMN complex.
